![]() One of the most important lessons any grassroots supporter ever learns is to never just sit around waiting for the campaign to tell you what to do. "Grassroots" is just another way of saying "from the bottom up". Real grassroots starts with ordinary citizens taking the initiative (e.g. this website) to make things happen for their candidate.
Below you will find a list of things you can be doing to help Mike Huckabee win the Republican nomination and go on to win the White House. Each item includes a description of the activity along with links to resources to help you get started. Make it your goal to do each activity on this list at least once before the first primaries and caucuses are held -- and to recruit at least two other people to do the same.
1) Sign-up for the official campaign newsletter.
The campaign newsletter is a great way to stay up-to-date on what's going on in the campaign. You will receive updates from the campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, as well as from Mike Huckabee himself. If you've donated to the campaign you should already get these emails. 2) Sign up for Huck's Army and then enlist others. One of the first things any Huckabee supporter should do (whether they want to get involved in grassroots activities or not) is to declare their support for Mike Huckabee by enlisting at HucksArmy.com. Ultimately, our goal is to enlist every single Huckabee supporter across the country in an accurate reflection of Mike's strong appeal to millions of Americans. If you have a website or blog consider posting a link to HucksArmy.com and directing other supporters to sign-up and get involved. To make this easier we've provided some snazzy looking sidebar and banner ads for you to use. 3) Volunteer for the official campaign. Even as you get involved through Huck's Army you should still make sure that you volunteer with the official campaign. We're just here to tide you over until they're ready to give grassroots supporters more direction -- make sure you're signed up to hear from them: 4) Contact all of your family and friends about Mike Huckabee. You'd be surprised how effective a short email or phone call can be. The truth is that a referral from someone you know (even from way back) can be more persuasive than the endorsement of a major public figure. You are the very best person to reach your family and friends. So what are you waiting for? Open up that address book and start sending out emails or making phone calls today. Include a link to your favorite Huckabee Video and encourage them to check out his website: MikeHuckabee.com. Once they're on fire, direct them here to get involved. Also, make sure that you keep following up with people. Most people are feeling guilty because they know that they should be paying attention to politics, but they're not sure where to start. You might feel like you are bothering them, but most likely they just appreciate knowing what's going on and which candidate is worthy of their vote. 5) Sign up for the Huck's Army Forums. The forums on this website are the best place online to connect with other supporters around the country and get involved in grassroots projects. In just our first few weeks we've already organized DVD-distribution, home-made sign building, state delegate registration, etc. We have general forums for Huckabee news, grassroots discussion, and "Mike on the Issues." We have forums for responding to negative articles and attacks from other campaigns, forums for showcasing your work (made a new Huckabee video?), and forums for just getting to know other supporters ("How old is everyone on here anyway?"). 6) Join your local Meetup group or start your own. Meetup.com helps you find others in your area that support Mike Huckabee and makes it easy for you to plan get-togethers (i.e. "meetups") watch the debates, build yard-signs, distribute flyers, etc. -- anything and everything you want. While the forums are a great place to interact with others nationally the Meetup Groups are the very best way to connect with other supporters locally. As grassroots supporters it should always be our goal to use the Internet to facilitate "real-world" activities. Meetups are the way to do that. Joining an existing Meetup Group in your area is free, but starting a new one costs $19 per month. Don't let that stop you. Start your group and then as the group grows you can probably get other people to chip in and split the cost with you. Don't wait for someone else to do it. Just start one! 7) Give (financially) till it hurts. We don't need to tell you that this is a historic election. Much hangs in the balance. Mike Huckabee is the only candidate who will take this country up, not down; and who has a proven track record as an innovative, optimistic, and authentic conservative. Every four to five years most Americans will spend several thousand dollars (if not more) on replacing their vehicle. Why wouldn't we be willing to give the maximum amount ($2,300 per individual, $4,600 per married couple) to select the next leader of our country? Don't wait to give. Any money you give now will be worth 100 times what it will be worth later. We would challenge you to make the largest donation you can at this time and commit to giving no less than $10 on a weekly basis with larger donations made as you can afford them. Make sure that you use the Huck's Army Donor Code: 160 so the campaign knows that it's from you. During World War II millions of Americans sacrificed greatly to make sure that the boys on the frontlines had enough. Their motto was, "Do with less so they'll have enough." Are you willing to do with less so Mike will have enough? 8) Contact key leaders and urge them to support Mike Huckabee. Many key evangelical and political leaders have expressed high regard for Mike Huckabee but haven't taken the step of actually endorsing him. Others have said that they like Mike, but for "pragmatic" reasons they need to support one of the candidates with a better chance of winning. These leaders need to know that they are out-of-step with what is happening across the country. A short letter or phone call can make a distinct impression. They are all hearing from members of the other campaigns -- they need to hear from ordinary Americans. 9) Make Mike your friend on Facebook or MySpace. The number of "friends" a candidate has on these social-networking sites is considered a indication of their appeal -- especially among younger voters. If you already have a Facebook or MySpace profile make sure you add the future President of the United States to your friends list. 10) Put a sign in your yard. Especially if you have property on a busy street a well-placed yard sign can make a huge impact. We recommend that you order signs from The Victory Store and/or make some yourself. The Victory Store has the best prices we've been able to find and home-made signs demonstrate the strongest grassroots support (plus they're fun to make). You can also invest in printing a quantity of yard signs yourself through a sign-vendor and then distributing them to other supporters in your area or even around the country. Check out the link below (far right) to hear from a supporter who is doing a great job at this. However, keep in mind that this approach is much more labor intensive. 11) Put a bumper-sticker on your car. People read bumper-stickers when they are behind you on the road or when they walk by your parked car. Some of our friends had their neighbor convert to Mike Huckabee after staring at their bumper-sticker across the street and then checking out his website. If you only need 1-2 bumper stickers then you can order from the official campaign store. The Victory Store provides magnetic bumper-stickers with price breaks at 6, 12, 50, and 100. You can also find large quantities of bumper-stickers on eBay from time-to-time. 12) Burn and distribute Mike Huckabee DVDs. Nothing is more effective in getting people to like Mike than to have them watch him speak. With that in mind, burning and distributing Mike Huckabee DVDs is like building Mike a platform and a podium and letting him speak for himself. Each video on our website can be downloaded (Quicktime Only) and burned onto DVDs. Just select your favorite videos and start production. If you feel like you've done a good job make sure you let everyone know under the Member Works Spotlight section of the forums -- then offer to mail them to whoever wants them. If you are using copyright materials you cannot charge for them, but you can be reimbursed for shipping expenses. 13) Wave Huckabee signs during rush hour. While no one likes to admit it, they do notice people on the sidewalk waving signs and they usually remember what the signs say. Since that is true, waving signs during rush hour is a great way to bring people's attention to Mike Huckabee. Gather your signs (home-made are great here) and your little ones (no one can resist an eight-year-old with a Huckabee sign) and make it a family adventure at the busiest intersection in your area. If you are part of a local Meetup Group get other supporters to join you. TIP: Drivers will honk their horns for you if you wave at them and make a honking motion. Semi-Truck drivers are especially good at this. The kids (and the grown-ups) can make it a competition to see who gets the most cars to honk. Honks = Attention. 14) Write Letters-to-the-Editor. A thoughtful letter to the editor of your local newspaper (or even a national paper) can be read by hundreds or even thousands of people if it gets published. Studies show that letters-to-the-editor are often one of the most-read sections of a newspaper! From time-to-time Google News will even feature such letters on their home-page. How's that for making a difference? Especially if you like to write (and even if you don't) consider writing something that could be submitted to newspapers around the country. Make sure that your logic is sound and your facts are straight -- and make your best case for why Mike Huckabee should be the next president. 15) Call in to talk radio shows. Calling into your favorite radio talk shows is a great way to reach hundreds of people with some accurate information about Mike Huckabee. If the talk show host likes Mike then you will give him or her a great chance to say so. If they don't and try to argue with you, you will have a great chance to correct some common misconceptions. The link below will provide you with the web addresses of some popular national Christian talk show hosts, but the best place for you to start is with the shows that you already listen to you -- that way you will know the host and have a good idea of how to prepare. 16) Go door-to-door in your area. This simply the best way to get the message out in your neighborhood. It's a great activity for a Meetup Group to do together. Below is a link to some excellent instructions written by an experienced Huckabee supporter. It tells you everything you need to know. So what are you waiting for?
